Get Ahead For Winter

Top tips for your home in winter

As we approach the cooler months, you’re likely to require more frequent gas deliveries. It’s essential that we can get to your tank and deliver to you quickly and safely. Here are our top tips to keep you flo-ing all year round.

Make sure your deliveries can get through when you need them

These tips will help you make sure your Flogas account is healthy and your tank stays topped up throughout the colder months

Cut trees back

Please make sure that your driveways and paths are cut back to allow our tankers and drivers to get through easily.

Check access to your tank

It’s especially important that there is no vegetation or flammable materials around your tank. Our drivers will always visually check the health of your tank too – but, if you have any concerns, report this to us straightaway.

Spread your payments

Our Budget Direct Debit is the best way to pay – spread your gas payments over 12 months, so you don’t get big bills over winter.

Use a thermostat

Set your heating and hot water to come on to fit around your routine, so you’re only using it when needed. Also, lowering your thermostat by just 1oC could save you money – but make sure you keep a temperate 21oC in living rooms and 18oC in bedrooms.

Turn your boiler down to 60°C

The temperature that your boiler sends water to the radiators is called “flow temperature”. Reducing this is not the same as lowering your thermostat, and won’t noticeabley reduce the temperature of your home, but may slightly increase the time it takes to reach the target temperature on your thermostat.

If you are over 65, or have pre-existing health conditions, or have children under 5, you might want to set a slightly higher flow temperature of 65°C to ensure your home warms more quickly.

Banish draughts

Keep heat in and cold air out this winter with quick and easy ways, like dressing your doors with draught excluders and lined curtains. For a longer term investment, it could be worth considering new double glazed windows with heat reflective glass and it may sound obvious, but draw your curtains as soon as it gets dark – it makes a big difference, making your home extra cosy and warm.

Turn radiators down in rooms you’re not using

If you’re not using a room all of the time, turning the valve to around 2.5 to 3 (this is around 18°C) is better than turning the valve to ‘off’ as the boiler has to work harder to get the room back up to temperature again.

If you are over 65, or have pre-existing health conditions, or have children under 5, you should ensure you’re warm enough and have a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C.
Book a boiler health check

Boilers work particularly hard during the winter months so show yours some TLC…getting it serviced along with any other gas appliances in your home prior to the winter months will make sure it is running as efficiently as possible.

If your boiler is 15 years old or more it could be time to replace it. Choosing an energy efficient condensing boiler could cut your heating bills significantly and achieve efficiencies of 90%

Insulate

Insulating your loft is a simple job that will dramatically cut heat loss from your home. Also add a thick jacket to your water tank- this alone can reduce heat loss by 75%.

Bleed radiators

Regularly bleeding radiators to remove trapped air can significantly improve how efficiently your heating system runs, more importantly just how quickly it will heat up your home.

Don’t leave it too late

We advise our manual ordering customers to check their tank levels and place fuel orders early, especially in the run up to Christmas. Whilst we will continue making deliveries throughout the festive period, it is an exceptionally busy time of year and can be made worse by impassable roads, due to snow and ice, so it pays to plan ahead. For full peace of mind you should place your order when your tank level reaches 40%.

Alternatively, we think you’ll benefit from switching to our Auto Ordering scheme and not having to worry about your orders…
